What is the best free antivirus, free antispyware and free firewall?

antivirus
Robert from Canada asked:

I think that security is an important topic today. Virus and hackers can break your computer any moment. I’m thinking about installing a free antivirus (like AVG or Norton), a free antispyware and a free and trustable firewall. Three free softwares in total. Please, recommend me the ones you proved by yourself they are very effective for home and work computers.

If you want free anti-virus software then go with AVG 8.0 free edition, some people suggest Avira AntiVir which has a good detection rate but the free version can take upto 2 hours to update which makes it almost unusable, AVG updates are small and takes seconds.

Some people suggest Avast which has an outdated interface (Link below) and is poor at detecting viruses (pc pro labs test).

AVG 8.0 is the best free anti-virus software its not perfect but has a nice interface, decent detection and quick updates.

Ad-aware is a useful free program as well run it once a week to clear obvious adware.

I would recommend using the firefox web browser it is simple and easy to use and it blocks a lot of drive-by viruses that internet explorer would let through.

    Proof that firefox is safer:

I’ve tried other browsers like Opera (way too fussy and complicated to use) and Safari (too slow & and not as customizable), but firefox remains my main browser.

    Download firefox:

Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on without it you are browsing blind.
